Overview
Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, affects bowel function and can cause recurring abdominal symptoms without visible structural damage.
Symptoms
Abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea or changes between bowel patterns may occur.
Causes
The exact cause is not fully understood. Gut sensitivity, diet, stress and changes in bowel movement can be involved.
Treatment and care
Diagnosis requires clinical assessment and sometimes tests to rule out other conditions. Individual management may involve diet, stress support and medicines.
